Description

Louis Phelypeaux 1705-1771, was a prominent statesman at the court of Louis XV, Minister of State, Maison du Roi which supervised Royal buildings, the Kings Household and supervision of Hugenot Protestant matters. He was also briefly Foreign Minister in 1770.

He was awarded the Order of the Holy Spirit, the highest civil order, in 1757 and this Chinese service would have been ordered to coincide with this important event.

He built Hotel de Florentin, now known as Hotel de Talleyrand in 1767, at the corner of Place de la Concorde. This now part of the site of the US Embassy and has been recently restored to its eighteenth century magnificence.
