Description

A very rare Meissen porcelain wall mirror, probably originally from a pair or set of four. It is likely that there would have been a bronze candle arm at the base to act as a girandole and mirrors of silver and giltwood can be seen lining the wall of German interiors of the early 18th century. Often shown hanging precariously from rails by rods or cords, the fragility of the these girandoles has resulted in their scarcity. Wall mirrors in porcelain of this period are extremely rare.

The construction is notable, the four large porcelain sections being held in position with bolts onto a panelled, limewood support which seems to be entirely original.

Bought through the dealer Albrecht Neuhaus of Wurtzburg (1936-2013) Neuhaus was one of the pre-eminent German artdealers of the postwar period.
