Description
Henry Goldman (1857-1937) was member of the Goldman Sachs banking dynasty of New York. He was instrumental in establishing the bank’s reputation as leading investment bankers at the end of the 19th century and used his wealth to form a notable collection of medieval and renaissance paintings and works of art.
Largely bought in Paris and London they were shipped to his mansion on Fifth Avenue and his collection privately published in 1922. His collection remained largely intact after his death with sales and a few gifts to museums via Jopeph Duveen and was sold at auction at Parke Bernet in 1948.
Chenue are the principal warehousing and shipping company in Paris having been established in 1760 and oval labels such as ours are found on much furniture and works of art handled circa 1900-1920.
