Description

German academic research in the 1920s into blue and white Chinoiserie pottery in German collections created a genre of Berlin/Potsdam/Frankfurt ‘delft’ of the 17th century. In 1923, Otto von Falke produced a fine, well illustrated book which catalogues these wares together with the latest research and description of the collections.

This grouping has remained until more recent reappraisal has returned much of this group to the town of Delft and made for export to the German Princely states.

This rare vase is most liketly to be part of this export group. It has been recently catalogued as from Berlin and infact has its pair in the National Museum of Oslo (OK-09823) as being from Potsdam, a gift of 1923 when the attribution was first made. However, the lack of evidence of the output of these German factories and the small number of factories in production, less than five, compared with the twenty or so in Delft employing 1500 workers, points to a probable Dutch origin.
