Description
The design of this table and the construction in limewood indicates a Southern French (or possibly South German origin.) A closely related giltwood side table in the Musee Vouland in Avignon strengthens the attribution to the region of Provence.
Influenced by French carving of the late Louis XIV period but with distinctively shallow cutting of the gesso, the most unusual feature of this table is probably the painted top. Painted in imitation of brass-inlaid red tortoiseshell, the design of the painted inlay follows the simpler and more geometric taste of Germany and Vienna rather than more complex, often pictorial drawing current in Paris at this time led by the Boulle workshop.
