Description

Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe 1915-2014) was born Mary Crewe-Milne, the daughter of the 1st Marquess of Crewe. She inherited West Horsley, Surrey from her mother which contained many items which had originated in the family’s Mayfair mansion, Crewe House on Curzon Street.

These rare stands with coloured marble tops and architectural bases are mentioned in the Crewe House inventory of 1913 and photographed in situ in 1937.

The architectural style and the carved oak of the bases relates to the Antiquarian taste best known through the collections of William Beckford at Fonthill and Lansdown Tower in Bath.
