Description
Glemham Hall near Woodbridge in Suffolk is an Elizabethan house which was extensively altered after 1709 following the new ownership of Dudley North (1684-1730).
A set of 16 chairs and two settees of a very similar design, and possibly by the same maker but with original English Soho tapestry covers can be seen in interior photographs from Country Life January 1910. The set was sold at Christies in 1945 and dispersed with one settee now at the V and A museum.
Other slightly earlier giltwood chairs from the house are also at the V and A having been originally sold from the house in 1924.
This set of four large side chairs would have originally been a larger set and is all that remained at Glemham. It is thought that the group were ordered as part of the 1722 renovations, perhaps around 1725-1730. They all seem to retain the original upholstery, though re-covered, with the legs and frame in completely untouched condition. They remained in the house until 2024.
